Introduction –

Norfolk Artist and Landscape Oil Painter, Nial Adams, is delighted to once again be teaching two-day oil painting courses in North Norfolk.

Notes for future courses –

The course will be held at the stunning Blickling Hall, an impressive Jacobean stately home dating back to 1616 and now in the care of the National Trust.

Although Nial accepts private students, normally on a 1-2-1 basis at his Studio, he rarely teaches group courses, so this is an excellent opportunity and not to be missed.

Previous Courses have been a great success and we expect this new Spring Course to be fully booked (Max 12 Students).

Who the Course is for –

As mentioned above, this course is aimed at the intermediate and ‘improving’ artist. This course is ideal if you are experienced in Acrylics and want to learn how to work in Oil Paint using the traditional methods.

Nial will be teaching ‘from the ground up’ focusing on the solid core basics of building an oil painting in stages, using classical techniques.

Although not a requirement, obviously some experience in art and painting will be a huge benefit and enable you to develop your skills and improve your work.

Perhaps you’re used to painting in another media; acrylics, watercolour, etc., and you want to try your hand at Oil Painting. Or maybe you’re used to working in oils but feel that you’ve not yet nailed the core skills and techniques to lift your work to the next level.

With ten hours of tuition and practice, over two days, Nial will be guiding the group and working with each individual artist to help them learn and understand. Please note; this is not just a ‘talk-and-chalk’ demonstration course.

What to expect –

Working together in the Blickling Hall Gallery (known as The Loft), a bright and quiet space, you’ll be working in oils on canvas, from an easel, following Nial as he demonstrates and explains. Nial will spend time with each individual artist, explaining and guiding.

Norfolk Artist Nial AdamsThis course focuses on Landscape painting, building composition, skies and tonal contrast. You’ll be learning traditional oil painting techniques, just as Nial learned from his father.

Nial’s style would best be described as ‘tonal realism’, his work has attracted awards, reviews and acclaim, as well as collectors internationally. Earlier in 2019 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Art (FRSA).

His focused but informal teaching style will give you time and opportunity to ask questions about specific oil painting methods and get the most from this two-day, immersive creative experience.

You’ll also be able to enjoy your surroundings, stepping away from the bustle of busy modern-life, find new inspiration and perhaps even make new art friends.

Above all, you’ll enjoy your weekend in beautiful surroundings, have fun and develop new skills and techniques that you can take home and develop further, whether you’re a keen amateur or professional artist.

Here’s a testimonial from one of Nial’s previous art course students –

“I had been looking at Nial’s work for some time with great interest, as I wanted to branch out into landscape painting from the portraits I had been doing for years.

Just by chance I saw on Facebook that he was teaching a workshop. I was really pleased to be able to get a place on the two day course.

Nial’s methods of teaching make it easy to understand the techniques of tonal painting and the methods of glazing and scumbling.

He demonstrates each stage in a very clear way. I am relatively experienced with oils, but the things I learnt have helped my art practice in so many ways.

I now have a whole new way of working that I can use and feel so much freer. On the same course, two of my fellow learners had never tried oil paints before.

Nial was able to support all of us to produce work we were very happy with. I would heartily recommend anyone, no matter what level of experience, to go to one of his workshops!”
